- Count to 10. Sometimes slowly works best, other times counting back from 10 quickly, over and over again helps to distract us until our breathing can slow.
- Do your best. Instead of aiming for perfection, be proud of your effort no matter how close you get.
- Pass it on. Put your life in perspective: Is it really all on me to handle these things in from of me? Or am I assuming too much control and could easily pass on some of the load to others around me?
- Welcome humor. A good laugh can make the sun shine through on even the darkest of days. Laughing release endorphins and those always help us feel better.
- Look on the bright side. We can also make ourselves restless with “negative self-talk” – the practice of constantly letting ourselves believe that the worst will happen. Make an effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
- Get involved. Volunteer or find a way to be active in your community. Let this be your opportunity to not worry about the small things and steer your focus to helping those around you.
- Talk to someone. Tell friends and family you’re feeling overwhelmed, and let them know how they can help you. If you don’t feel comfortable talking with those around you, find a professional that will listen to and help you come up with solutions that will work.
